Dixeebe

Dixeebe (Deej - bay) es una palabra sagrada de la cultura zapoteca, el pueblo indígena del Valle Central de Oaxaca. Se pronuncia con reverencia para dar gracias: una sola palabra honorífica de respeto y amor por el momento y su importancia. Dixeebe es la más pura expresión de agradecimiento por nuestras tradiciones y ancestros. Vemos el mezcal como un regalo de los dioses y “Dixeebe” es nuestra ofrenda de agradecimiento a cambio.

Dixeebe (Deej - bay) is a sacred word from the Zapotec culture, the indigenous people of Oaxaca’s Central Valley. It is spoken in reverence to give thanks - a single honorific word of respect and love for the moment and its importance. Dixeebe is the purest expression of gratitude for our traditions and ancestors. We see mezcal as a gift from the gods and “Dixeebe” is our offering of thanks in return.

LAND

Todavía se pueden encontrar artefactos de la historia de nuestra familia en el desierto de Santiago Matatlán. Las generaciones anteriores habían excavado pozos de fermentación en el lecho de roca, dejando reliquias de cavidades rocosas en nuestras tierras ancestrales que sirven como testimonio permanente de su ingenio y fortaleza. Con Mezcal Dixeebe honramos a nuestros ancestros con mezcal elaborado con los mismos magueyes, cultivados bajo el mismo sol y producido tradicionalmente por mezcaleros con la misma sangre bombeando por nuestras venas.

Artifacts from our family’s history can still be found in the wilderness of Santiago Matatlán. Previous generations had carved out fermentation pits in the bedrock, leaving relics of rocky cavities on our ancestral lands that serve as permanent testaments to their ingenuity and fortitude. With Mezcal Dixeebe, we honor our ancestors with mezcal made from the same magueys, grown under the same sun and traditionally produced by mezcaleros with the same blood pumping in our veins.

La familia Cortés y la familia Hernández de la esposa de Valentín, Irma, son guardianes de la producción ancestral de mezcal en su ciudad natal de Santiago Matatlán. Sus hijos Asis, Marisol y Giovani son la última generación de una larga línea de mezcaleros, unificando ambos lados del árbol genealógico como encarnaciones modernas de su cultura con una adhesión a tradiciones profundamente arraigadas. De la misma manera, Mezcal Dixeebe es a la vez un vínculo con el pasado y un camino hacia el futuro.

The Cortés family, and the Hernández family of Valentín’s wife, Irma, are stewards of ancestral mezcal production in their hometown of Santiago Matatlán. Their sons Asis, Marisol and Giovani are the latest generation in a long line of mezcaleros, unifying both sides of the family tree as modern embodiments of their culture with an adherence to deeply rooted traditions. In this same way, Mezcal Dixeebe is both a link to the past and a path into the future.

Como dice Don Valentín, es su amigo, su compañero de vida, su espíritu, su legado. Desde los 13 años su vida ha estado enfocada en la cultura y tradición de la producción de mezcal. Junto a su padre José Cortés, Don Valentín aprendió a cultivar maguey en sus tierras y a producir magistralmente mezcal en el palenque.

As Don Valentín says, it is his friend, his life partner, his spirit, his legacy. From the age of 13, his life has been focused on the culture and tradition of mezcal production. Alongside his father José Cortés, Don Valentín learned how to cultivate maguey on their land and masterfully produce mezcal in the palenque.

Utiliza sus décadas de experiencia para salvaguardar el conocimiento que le fue confiado, mientras crea el trabajo de una vida con mezcales que surge del corazón.

Using knowledge that was passed down to him through nearly 200 years of family history, Don Valentín creates what he likes the most - true mezcal that exalts tradition and continues a heritage. He uses his decades of experience to safeguard the knowledge he was entrusted with, while creating a life’s work of mezcals that comes from the heart.
